What is moringa? Moringa is one of those superfoods that supposedly has tons of great benefits to it- tons of calcium, potassium, protein, and vitamins C, A and E. It strengthens your immune system, makes you feel fuller longer which can aid in weight loss, and is high in antioxidants. It's a natural anti-inflammatory, can help fight diabetes and can strengthen many of your body's organ functions including the liver, brain and heart. It's considered a superfood and it's not hard to see why. Want to learn how to eat it? Read on for plenty of ideas on how to incorporate moringa into your daily diet.
Moringa trees are pretty easy to grow, and from a small seedling you can have a large tree that will give you an abundance of fresh moringa to last you all season long. We have two trees growing in our yard and I love going out to pick some leaves each day to incorporate into my diet. Before a hard freeze you can harvest it all and either freeze or dehydrate it for later use so it doesn't go to waste and you can have accessible home grown moringa all year round. You can easily obtain moringa powder in healthfood stores and online, but why buy it if you can grow it yourself? Below I've put together some really easy ways to prepare and eat moringa into your every day meals so you can enjoy its health benefits but it won't be a chore to add to your diet :)
1. Add it into a salad. Moringa has a mild taste when mixed in with other greens. If you chop the fresh leaves finely or just slide them off the stem and toss them into a mixed salad with other greens, you may barely notice they're in there. Mix in a variety of greens, toppings and fresh veggies and add a wholesome dressing for a complete raw meal (try adding chopped fruit, nuts, seeds, and a simple dressing of oil/vinegar/lemon juice).
2. Make a tea. Use moringa powder or fresh leaves in a tea by adding them to hot water and allowing them to steep for 10 minutes. Add some agave, honey or stevia leaves to sweeten it up. My friend Sita often drinks a homemade tea with moringa, turmeric and cacao out of a mason jar when I see her and it's still on my list to try myself!
3. Make a soup! Fresh or dried leaves can be blended into a creamy soup with other greens and veggies. Try broccoli and coconut cream as a delicious base, and add some spices to make it more flavorful. Use an immersion blender or food processor to blend until smooth.
4. Add it into pesto or guac! Blend it's greenness into something that's already green so you won't even notice it's there.. and it's earthy taste can have some nice flavors to add as well. You can even make a pesto completely out of moringa by subbing it for the basil if you love it's taste. If you just want a hint of it, blend it in with the basil.
5. Blend it into a smoothie! Add it into a smoothie with other fresh greens and mask the taste with frozen or fresh fruit. Delicious, and energizing! Try this kiwi glow smoothie with moringa.. it's my favorite!
