Tomorrow is Onyx's gotcha day! This little guy is my pride and joy and literally is my entire world (except my other 3 dogs of course). Since we foster failed with him 2 years ago I look at him every single day and think about how we got so lucky (except of course, for the moments we are chasing him around the neighborhood because he jumped the fence, or trying to get rats and other small critters out of his mouth, or filling in the holes he dug, or getting him off the human beds where he leaves muddy paw prints....)
Anyway, we still love this little guy and we do a celebration for all of our dog's gotcha days, usually consisting of a dog cake, cookies, or pup cakes, some candle lighting and singing and maybe even a new toy or present. Tonight we prepped the cookie's for Onyx's special day tomorrow but couldn't help giving each dog some cookie treats to celebrate a little early :). They were so excited when I took these out of the oven I didn't want to make them wait for them.
These cookies are wholesome and healthy for dogs and completely vegan. Dogs love them because they have a little added crunch to them. I got this awesome recipe from Healthy Slow Cooking, a great site for meatless recipes for humans too! If you love baking for your dog and are looking for other vegan dog treat recipes, here are a couple more I've posted in the past, a recipe for Manny's pup-cakes, and a recipe for Weiner's pumpkin peanut butter cookies!
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons ground flax seed
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 melted coconut oil
1 large banana, mashed
1/4 cup water
Directions:
Grease a cookie sheet with olive or coconut oil and preheat the oven for 350 degrees F. If you have a cookie or muffin mold for dog treats, you can use that instead!
Mix everything together in a food processor, mixer, or with your hands in a large bowl. Add a little extra water if mixing by hand.
Measure about 1 tablespoon of dough per cookie, and flatten on the cookie sheet with a spoon. Repeat until you use all the dough. Alternatively you can use a dog treat mold like I did here (I found this awesome Paula Deen silicone dog treat mold brand new in its package at Goodwill for a steal!).
Bake for 20 minutes.
Let cool before giving to your dog.
