As we catch the "tail" end (pun intended) of October, we certainly can't forget to acknowledge that it's Pitbull Awareness Month AND pumpkin everything month. If you haven't noticed, my blog has been filled with fun pumpkin themed recipes this month, because after all, pumpkin is delicious and it's good for you. For a little inspiration to pitbull lovers during tough times of hatred towards our big-headed angels, and some guidance to those that dislike or don't know much about pitties, check out my recent post about standing up to those that want to ban my favorite breed. Clearly these cookies revolve around dachshunds, which yes I love, but pitbulls and mixes are my real favorites :)
Anyway, these three ingredient dog cookies are the perfect healthy snacks for your pooch, and quick and easy to make. They clearly combine the various reasons to celebrate this month, our furry babies and the orange fruit that makes fall feel like fall. Our cookies are literally "Weiner cookies" considering they ARE weiners, and they are FOR weiners. Manny is still going to eat some of course, and we already shared some of this batch with a couple of Manny's buddies. These cookies are not meant for humans (they have no sugar and taste awful), although if you ate them they certainly wouldn't hurt you. This recipe was taken from Kevin & Amanda. I couldn't enjoy them but I promise you our dogs did! They keep begging for more. We doubled the recipe because we spoil our kids but this normal amount should be perfect to last a while for a dog or a couple of dogs.
Enjoy pups!
Ingredients:
½ cup of natural peanut butter (no sugar, no salt, no nothing except peanuts!)
1 cup of 100% pumpkin puree, from the can or homemade (if making yourself, use steam method and do not add any oil or seasonings). Homemade may leave some real chunks of pumpkin which dogs LOVE
1 ¾ cups of whole wheat flour, or another kind of flour (like rice) if your dog is allergic to wheat
A tablespoon or so of your LOVE (your dog will taste the difference
of this intangible ingredient for sure, they will miss it if it's gone!)
A tablespoon or so of your LOVE (your dog will taste the difference
of this intangible ingredient for sure, they will miss it if it's gone!)
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with foil and spray a thin layer of coconut oil.
In a large bowl mix together peanut butter and pumpkin really well, and gradually add in flour while molding the dough with your hands. This way it will mix evenly.
Roll it out with a rolling pin if you've got one, and cut out cookies with fun cutters.
Dog(s) may be very excited by this point in the cookie making activity.
Place cookies on the sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes.
Allow to cool before feeding the treats to your weiner or non-weiner dog. Enjoy!!!
