I must take the opportunity to swoon over my new favorite "vegan cheese". Months ago, I saw online that Field Roast was creating a new product; gourmet vegan cheese of assorted flavors and I searched for them everywhere but didn't succeed at finding them. I even heard from friends how amazing these "cheeses" were and that I had to try them. Yesterday when at our local supermarket "Wards", I noticed them in the vegan section! Wards is always carrying new vegan products and sometimes ditching some too, so I always have to take advantage of trying their new products when I can. I got "Tomato Cayenne" and "Coconut Herb" flavors. Today I opened the coconut herb package and started chowing down on the addicting cheese one slice at a time. I have had a lot of vegan cheeses, and although good or satisfying, I haven't found one yet that I actually enjoy MORE than I had enjoyed any kind of dairy cheese. This my friend, is that winner of a cheese, and unlike some other cheese alternatives, this actually tastes like real cheese, but better! As long as I have some Chao by my side (or in my fridge), I will never have the need to go back to dairy products. For all of you omnivores out there that insist you could never give up vegan because "ohhhh I can't give up cheese :
(" .. well I'm sorry but you no longer have an excuse! Here is my tasty grilled "Chao" cheese recipe I made with these guys.
Ingredients:
2 slices of organic sprouted bread
2 slices of Field Roast Chao cheese (flavor of your choice)
2 teaspoons of coconut oil or coconut oil cooking spray
Directions:
Heat a frying pan on medium-high heat and spray with oil or add 1 teaspoon of oil. Place one slice of bread down flat, followed by the 2 cheese slices and other piece of bread stacked in that order. Flatten with the back of a spatula to heat all the way through, and flip after about 2 minutes when the bread starts to get a dark golden color. Repeat for the other side. Turn heat down to off and allow sandwich to sit in heat for a few extra minutes to allow the middle of the cheese slices to melt and get gooey inside the sandwich.
Serve with a side of creamy vegan soup of your choice (tomato, pumpkin, butternut squash, vegetable, etc.) This makes an excellent soup dipping sandwich!
