So I'm a failure. A real failure. A foster failure that is. This guy, who we call Onyx is only the second dog have we fostered and I fell so hard for him after only a day or so. I tried to push off my feelings, but when it came time to bring him to an adoption event, I found myself talking people out of adopting him (I'm not sure if anyone would have seriously adopted him anyway) but just the thought of him going home with someone else was unbearable. He is best friends with Manny and they are inseparable, he is in love with Weiner, and he fits into the family just perfectly. He loves to snuggle. With us and with Manny and Weiner. He is always wanting to please us. He's literally like that huge stuffed teddy bear everyone has always wanted.. he just sits on your lap like a child and looks up at you with his big brown swollen eyes and speaks through his eyes. Looking into his eyes, I just feel his soul and mine intertwined. I can't let him go. Not officially yet.. but we are pretty sure we will be adopting him at some point. I mean just look at this? How could we not.
I always pictured our third dog being a black pitbull. Since black dogs and pitbulls are usually overlooked in shelters and unwanted the most (and given the fact that there just tends to be more black dogs and more pits than most others) I knew a dog like Onyx would come into our lives eventually. But when we went to pick up a new foster, we were not picky and just said pick a dog that will benefit from fostering, and the kennel staff picked him for us, figuring he would fit into our household and lifestyle, and would be a good play mate for Manny. Once we got him home we realized he's just basically perfect. To us. Every dog has their quirks and annoyances but nothing he does bothers me because he's a sweet little boy, once an unwanted nuisance dogs, and now like a child to me. Being a child, he of course could not be without a onesie. Josh and I ventured to the Goodwill last week and found some clearance onesies in the children's section. After washing them well and having them "dog-ready" we tried them on the boys and Weiner. Manny is a large boy and his didn't make it past his shoulders, but Onyx was a perfect match for the fleece 3T onesie once I cut a tail hole in it and cut off the feets. The spiderman onesie was a good loose fit on Weiner after the sleeves had been rolled up only 30 times or so. Since it's been surprisingly cold here for Florida, everyone needs to bundle up so this is what we've got on our hands.
Staffies in Pajammies and Weiners in onesies kinda has a kick to it. My next plan is to initiate onesie wearing for shelter dogs at our county shelter to help get them adopted. After all, who the hell can resist a pitbull in a onesie?? We sure can't! If he was a foster we were going to let go, he would get adopted in a hot second from this photo. So if we are going to fail in our mission of fostering to save more dogs, the least we can do is save more dogs by making them irresistible by dressing them in onesies and pajamas. Here's Manny, a little upset that his onesie doesn't really fit. But don't worry, he's been wearing it around with the arms fully on and the legs just dangling down his back. He looks at the others and always has to have whatever they have. Oh well, whatever makes these attention craving creatures happy!
