So my mom was dog-sitting for Josh and I this past weekend, and I guess I can't ever expect a dose of Alvin to occur with the lack of "adventure". This adventure called for some pain, anguish, shock, fear, and later on and after the fact... a few laughs.
So we have a spiral staircase that's a death hazard in every which way... open slots in between each step, an opening next to each stair as the railing is just held up by some flimsy metal rods, and the whole thing itself can be shaken with the strength of myself. It was always a fun game as a child to "slip" down each step off the side at increasing heights.. just to see what would happen. I never got hurt though, but it was a fun fortress to play on in an every day game of "make believe" or "pretend" Needless to say, this house is not good for young children... or dogs...
But anyway, my mom was staying here with all four dogs. All four meaning her two and my two. The four of them obsessively are glued to her heels everywhere she goes and not one dog can follow her without the others tagging along too.
All four dogs: Alvin, Elbee, Weiner, and Penny |
So as usual, my mom would go up the stairs.. followed by four dogs in such a tight narrow danger zone, and once again followed down by those four too. This time was different from usual though, because after my mom tried to sneak up the stairs just to get something, she was able to smoothy get up the stairs alone. But Alvin I guess, soon realized he was alone and bolted up the stairs to be where she was. Elbee, the bully, was somewhere in the mix of the events and what all my mom heard was a loud thud that shook the entire house. She looked over the side of the loft and next to the stairs one story below, Alvin lay on his side like a dead horse. She glanced at Elbee, who always has had it out to get Alvin every chance he gets (whether it's trying to rip off Alvin's face, tearing off a chunk of hair and flesh off Alvin's leg, or always yapping in Alvin face and showing his teeth) and Elbee had a smirk on his face as he glanced over the edge at Alvin's lifeless body down below. My mom ran down and grabbed Alvin but couldn't get him to respond or move. She feared he was paralyzed. Rushing him to the emergency vet, which from here is 40 minutes away, Alvin started to perk up as she got closer and was soon able to move around. The vet team waited with stretchers and their emergency squad prepared for the paralyzed and near dead dog that survived a one story fall and that was soon to arrive. But once she arrived with Alvin, he was back to his usual annoying self and didn't seem to have an issue with walking or moving about as he normally would.
Fortunately she didn't need to face the exorbitant vet bill she was expecting and Alvin came home perfectly fine.. just a little sore. Oh how LUCKY we are that Alvin is okay... I mean he easily could have broken a bone.. anywhere.. limb, rib, back, or easily have been paralyzed which would have meant a special doggy wheelchair and 24 hour assistance for Alvin, as if we don't have to cater to him enough already. Oy. Fortunately none of that is the case and he is fine. It's just shocking a 12 year old dog survived a fall from so high unscathed. Well then again it's Alvin, and if you've been reading some of his other adventures you probably aren't surprised at all. When actually I get around to making some form of cartoon or comic strip of Alvin's Adventures, this episode will surely earn the most laughs I think.
